Shopping for a car at a dealership can be an overwhelming experience. Even if you do a ton of research before you shop and have an idea of what vehicle you want, you still need to ask questions at the dealership. Here are a few essential queries to ask before you purchase a car:
Check on maintenance plans
New cars should be trouble free for some time, but eventually, they’ll require attention from an automotive technician. It could be scheduled maintenance like an oil change or tire rotation, a recall, or a more complicated, unexpected repair. So, knowing what maintenance plan, if any, comes with your new car can be a deciding factor in your purchase process.
Be sure to inquire about car care after you take ownership. “Get it in writing. Find out what — if anything — is free. Are oil changes covered? Tire rotations? Are there limits to how many times you can bring your car in? How long is the coverage?” advises Keith Barry, writer for ConsumerReports.org.
Get the exact and detailed cost
Most car buyers are working with a budget, which means it’s important to find a vehicle that doesn’t exceed your financial limits. But, the price of the vehicle can be a bit murky, especially if the salesperson is pushing you to focus on your monthly payment.
This tactic can cloud the out-the-door price, a number that you really should be calculating, warns Jaclyn Trop and Jenn Jones, writers for LendingTree.com. “The OTD price includes additional fees, such as dealer service and handling fees, extended warranties, taxes, title and licensing. These fees can add more than $10,000 to your vehicle’s price, so make sure the seller gives you a detailed breakdown before you leave the lot,” they add.
Inquire about incentives or rebates
Dealerships often have promotions attached to certain vehicles or specific models. Be sure to inquire to see if you qualify for cost-saving options like a rebate or incentive. This can help steer you to a vehicle that better supports your financial goals. If you do qualify, you may pay less in taxes, according to Rebecca Betterton, writer for Bankrate.com. Some rebates and incentives can even apply if you are a student or veteran, she adds.
Along with incentives and rebates, you’ll also want to ask about available warranty coverage. There are several types you can buy, so make sure you ask for a detailed explanation of both, Trop and Jones advise. Make sure the dealer explains the added cost as well, they add.
Receive a tutorial on the tech
Connectivity tech and infotainment systems are more advanced than ever. With more bells and whistles, the more complicated the system is to operate. It may claim it has everything and more than you ever wanted to stay connected, entertained, and informed, but if you cannot understand the system, there is no point to it, right? “Don’t get stuck with a system that’s frustrating to use. Get familiar with the tech on your test drive,” Barry suggests.
When you’re shopping for a car, remember to find out the answers to these questions for a more informed and successful purchase.
