How To Protect Yourself from a BIN Attack

April 26, 2023 by First Federal Bank

credit cardsBank Identification Number (BIN) fraud is a type of credit card fraud that involves the unauthorized use of a credit card that is not in the possession of the rightful owner. A BIN is the first six digits of a credit card number, and is used to identify the issuing bank.

A BIN attack typically involves using a computer program to generate random credit card numbers, along with the corresponding expiration date and security code, in an attempt to match valid BINs. The program can generate thousands or even millions of credit card numbers in a short amount of time.

Once a valid credit card number is generated, it can be used to make unauthorized purchases, or to withdraw cash from an ATM. In some cases, the attacker may also use the credit card number to make small transactions, such as purchasing a digital product, to test whether the credit card is valid and can be used for larger purchases.

If the credit card is valid, the attacker may continue to use it until the owner of the credit card discovers the unauthorized transactions and reports them to the bank or credit card company. At that point, the bank or credit card company will typically cancel the credit card and reimburse the owner for any unauthorized charges.

To prevent BIN attacks, banks and credit card companies often have fraud detection systems in place that monitor for suspicious activity, such as unusual purchase patterns, or transactions from unusual locations. They may also require additional verification, including a security code or address verification, before authorizing a transaction.

Here are some ways consumers can protect themselves against a BIN attack:

Be cautious with your personal information

Be careful where you share your personal information, including your credit card number, expiration date, and security code. Only share this information with trusted sources, and be cautious of phishing scams that try to trick you into giving out your information.

Keep your software up to date

Make sure your computer, phone, and other devices are running the latest software updates and security patches to help protect against malware that could be used in a BIN attack.

Monitor your credit card statements regularly

Check your credit card statements often for unauthorized charges. If you notice any suspicious activity, report it to your bank or credit card company immediately.

Use a reputable online merchant

Only use online merchants that you trust and that have a secure website. Look for the padlock symbol in your web browser's address bar, which indicates that the website is using a secure connection.

Use two-factor authentication

Some banks and credit card companies offer two-factor authentication, which requires you to enter a code sent to your phone or email in addition to your password when logging in or making a transaction.

By following these tips, you can help protect yourself from a BIN attack and reduce your risk of credit card fraud. Be sure to reach out to your financial institution immediately if you believe you have been the victim of fraud. The sooner you report the issue, the faster it can be resolved.
