How to Maximize Space Under Bathroom and Kitchen Sinks

sinksDo the spaces under your kitchen and bathroom sink look cluttered and unorganized? Or is it just really hard to find things you need? Check out these tips for maximizing that space!

Add some shelves

Most sink space is fairly tall, but there aren’t that many bathroom items or sink appliances that reach all the way to the top of the cabinet. To truly utilize that space, you can install shelves to separate the larger space into two smaller areas. Be careful to work around the pipes under the sink and refer to a plumber if you’re not entirely sure about how to do this. Even if you live in an apartment, you can probably find non-permanent shelves that stick via adhesive strips. They may not be able to withstand as much weight, though, so keep that in mind when organizing.

In the kitchen, vertical shelving might be better for organizational purposes. These upright shelves make it easy to slide in various pans and muffin tins. Not only that, but getting them out of the cabinet will be easier because you won’t have them all stacked on top of each other.

Consider containers

If shelves aren’t your ideal option for maximizing space under the sink, consider using containers to organize various smaller items like sponges, soaps, and more. You can opt for clear plastic tubs (with or without tops) to make it easier to see what’s inside. Add labels on the outside to make it even easier. Go with individual containers or look for a unit with drawer shelves to store things like combs, brushes, hair accessories, and a hair dryer. If you prefer not to use plastic, go with wire baskets under the sink for larger items that won’t fall through the openings

Don’t forget the door

A commonly underutilized organizational area is the cabinet door. If you’ve got the room on the inside, you may be able to install hooks or a rack on the door. This will allow you to put items like rags, bags, brushes, and more within easy reach — and without having to reach under the sink. A mounted magazine rack works great for a cookbook or a cutting board!

Not-so-lazy Susan

To help you manage your various cleaning solutions under the sink, install a lazy Susan. These rotating devices make it extremely simple to find what you’re looking for in an instant without reaching over other items and potentially knocking them over. Pro tip: Make sure all of the labels for the containers are facing out so you can see everything without needing to move anything.

You don’t have to live with clutter under your sinks. With these tips in mind, you’re well on your way to being more organized and making life a little bit easier.
