Tips for Decorating Walls in Your Home

WallsA blank wall holds endless possibilities for decoration! Here are a few suggestions to transform your bland walls into focal features and design statements you, your family, and your guests will love.

Create a photo or art gallery

Surrounding yourself with your favorite photographs and art is a great way to inspire creative thoughts and showcase the things, people, and designs you love. You can mix and match prints, photos, drawings, or other works you want to celebrate in your home.

“Opt for simple, cohesive frames or bring in an array of ornate variations to mix things up! Pro tip: Extend the gallery wall to the ceiling to create the illusion of a larger space,” advises Kristi Kellogg, writer for ArchitecturalDigest.com.

You can simplify the materials for your photo wall by creating a photo collage wall. Instead of framing each photo, print out your photos in similar dimensions and attach to your wall with thumbtacks to create a collage of the people and places you love the most, suggests Caroline Biggs, writer for ApartmentTherapy.com.

Get colorful

Paint can instantly transform the look and feel of a room. Plus, paint is a relatively inexpensive material, and you can apply it yourself! Instead of painting all four walls in your room one color, though, choose one to be the statement wall by covering it with a bolder or brighter hue than the rest of the walls. Or you can put your artistic skills on display with a freehand design, artwork, or mural. You can also use a stencil to guide the look of the wall, too, for a more consistent, yet inviting and interesting look.

“Whether it’s mosaic ‘tiles,’ an intricate pattern or something more sparse, this is a great way to add life to a plain wall,” according to the design experts at ParachuteHome.com.

If you don’t want to mess with paint, try wallpaper, which is making a big comeback in the world of design. With peel and stick removable wallpaper available on the market, there’s less commitment and stress about applying it, too, especially if you want to change it up regularly.

“There’s no better way to spice up a room in less than a few hours than temporary wallpaper,” said Biggs.

Expand the space

If you’re working with a small space, you can make it feel grander with a few beautiful mirrors. Not only do they reflect light, they also trick the eye that the dimensions of your room are greater than they actually are.

“Try hanging an oversized mirror, or display several smaller pieces salon-style,” according to Kellogg.

Build out storage

No matter how much storage you have in your home, you could probably benefit from a little more, especially in the form of beautiful built-in bookshelves. Whether you have a massive library collection or want to display your prized possessions or collectibles, built-in shelves add form and function to a bland wall.

“For a refined, cohesive aesthetic, consider placing monochrome or only neutral-colored books on the shelves,” advises ParachuteHome.com.
