5 Fun Hobbies to Try This Year

hobbiesIf you’re searching for a new hobby to enjoy, it can be daunting to choose a new thing to try. To help you decide, here are some various ideas that might sound appealing:

Calligraphy

Calligraphy is more than just writing words on a page. This decorative handwriting is practically an art form that can take a long time to perfect. You can easily start with a regular pen or pencil to learn the basics. Then, if you do enjoy it, you can invest in more tools that are specifically made for calligraphy like fountain pens and different types of paper. You can then use your new skill to add gorgeous lettering to crafts around your home or give some gifts a bit of pizazz when you’re addressing them.

Dancing

A great way to get a workout without lifting weights or getting on a treadmill is with dance! Even if you’re not interested in the exercise aspect, dancing can be incredibly fun at all levels. If you’ve got a partner, you can start simple with slow dances like a waltz or a rumba. Once you’ve mastered the steps, move up to more difficult styles like the quickstep, jive, and pasodoble. You can even learn how to dance by yourself with solo styles of dance like tap, jazz, ballet, hip-hop, and more. A creative way to get involved in dance is to look at your family heritage and find a style that aligns with that, such as Irish step dancing.

Thrifting

Shopping as a hobby? Yes, please! Thrifting is a bit different than standard shopping, though. The goal of thrifting is to find incredibly valuable items at lower prices. It takes some work, but you can find some real gems in the bottom of a bin at your local thrift store. You can choose to keep your cool new items or try to turn a profit with them. Many people turn to sites like eBay or Mercari to get an idea of how much an item will sell for online. Collectors will also share their most coveted items they’re searching for in online groups, giving you insight on what to look for when thrifting.

Video editing

You might not have thought about video editing as a hobby, but if you love sports, films, or television shows, you can easily find enjoyment with this pastime. Most modern computers come with editing software that lets you cut and paste clips as well as add things like audio and transitions. When you’ve got your video completed, try posting it on social media — you could even create a dedicated video editing account — and share it with the world. If you improve your skills enough and gain a social following, you might be able to add, “video editor” to your resume and explore a new career path, too.

Volunteering

Of course, giving back to your community can also be a fun hobby. Instead of only doing stuff around the holidays, when everyone else thinks of doing so, branch out to year-round efforts on a monthly basis. Whether you’re helping to build houses through Habitat for Humanity, cooking up meals at your local soup kitchen, or raising money for organizations you support, your community will thank you. At the end of the day, you’ll feel great and will have spent your time doing something worthwhile.

These are just a few ideas for getting started with a new hobby. With the right tools and time, you’ll be well on your way to spending quality time doing something you love!
