Selling This Fall? You Haven’t Missed Your Window

Summer's winding down, and if you've been thinking about selling your home, you might be wondering if it makes more sense to wait until next year.
Before you decide, it's worth taking a closer look at the fall market. About one in three existing home sales typically takes place during the final four months of the year.
Fall May Be Busier Than You Think
Data from the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) shows that roughly one-third of existing home sales occur during the final four months of the year. That share has also increased each year since 2023.

Source: Fannie Mae, Housing Forecast, August 2026; NAR, Real Estate and Economic Outlook, April 2026; MBA, MBA Mortgage Finance Forecast, August 2026; Wells Fargo, U.S. Economic Outlook: August 2026. Projections are estimates only and actual housing market activity may differ.
That means fall can still be an active time for homeowners considering a move.
What Does That Mean for Sellers?
Forecasts from Fannie Mae, the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA), NAR, and Wells Fargo point to approximately 4.16 million existing home sales for the year. Based on sales activity so far, roughly 1.4 million additional existing-home sales could take place between now and the end of the year.
That works out to approximately 11,800 homes selling each day during the fall and winter months, based on those projections.
Of course, market conditions vary by location, and individual results depend on factors such as pricing, property condition, inventory, buyer demand, and financing conditions.
Higher mortgage rates may be keeping some buyers on the sidelines, but buyers are still participating in the market. For homeowners considering a move, understanding current local conditions can help determine whether listing this fall makes sense for their individual situation.
Positioning Your Home for the Fall Market
If you’re considering selling, pricing and presentation can play an important role in how your home is positioned in the market.
A local real estate professional can provide insight into current buyer activity, comparable properties, local pricing trends, and ways to present your home to appeal to buyers in today’s market.
From preparing your home for photos to reviewing offers, a real estate professional can help guide homeowners through the selling process.
Bottom Line
Selling this fall may be worth considering. Buyers continue to participate in the housing market, and a significant portion of annual home sales typically occurs during the final months of the year.
