Are you ready to unplug and enjoy the great outdoors? Whether you’re hoping for a solo adventure, an excursion with friends, or a family getaway, it’s important to take some time to create a thorough plan, packing list, and activity outline for your camping trip. These tips will help you get ready:

Pick your type of camping

The first thing you need to do is determine what type of camping experience you want. Then figure out who you’re bringing along for the fun. If you choose to bring your pets, make sure to also consider their needs when weighing your options.

There are a variety of ways to camp. You can carve out anywhere from one night to multiple nights. You can camp out of your car, set up a tent and sleep outside, backpack over trails and set up camp along the way, secure a cabin at a campsite, or rent a camper that has all your amenities on wheels. Or if you want the camping experience with a greater air of luxury, try glamping.

If you’re looking at dedicated campgrounds, TripSavvy contributor Monica Prelle notes your decision will come down to the size of your party, your desired accommodations, and your equipment. Whether you choose public or private campgrounds, Prelle recommends researching your options beforehand by reading reviews and ratings.

Health essentials

No matter what approach you take to camping, you’re likely going to spend a lot of time outdoors and exposed to the elements. Your experience will depend on how well you prepare for the unexpected. In its Intro to Camping, REI recommends a packing list of essentials including sun protection, insect repellent, first-aid supplies, and toiletries. You’ll also want to pack food, water, and cooking equipment such as pans, plates, and cups. Matches or a firestarter are imperative for cooking over an open flame.

If you choose not to stay at a campground with bathrooms and showers, you may still be able to freshen up on your trip. Prelle recommends considering a portable camp shower, which allows you and your party to take hot showers at the end of a long day of hiking.

Weather-appropriate gear

Never is it more important to check and recheck the weather forecast than when you are planning a camping trip. You’ll need a handle on what conditions to expect so you can pack accordingly. Hot and humid days will require lighter options with a bit of an upgrade. According to REI, you’ll want to pack moisture-wicking items such as underwear and T-shirts as well as quick-drying pants and shorts. To help protect your skin from bug bites and excessive sun exposure, opt for long-sleeve shirts. Other essentials include a lightweight fleece or jacket, boots or shoes for rough paths, socks, and sleepwear. Extras for damp or chilly days include long underwear, a rain jacket and pants, gloves, and a warm hat.

With some thoughtful planning and a detailed packing list, you’ll have everything you need and want for a successful camping trip.
